There are two basic types of systems, with the main difference between the two being range.

XS Systems (Skiing, Snowboarding, and Down Hill Biking) - These systems are the long range systems. These systems are capable of timing 5 mile (8km) distances. The XS systems are also able to time multiple racers on the course at a time, as long as the racer in front has passed all of the intermediate beams before the next racer starts. These systems have also been used for street luge, long course downhill skateboarding, and long track car drags.

Basic Wireless Systems (Strength and Conditioning, Auto, Snowmobile, Rodeo) - These systems are less powerful with a maximum range of 850 feet (260 meters). These systems are only able to time one racer at a time, however, two systems on separate frequencies can be set up next to each other for two lanes. These systems have also been used for dog racing, skateboarding, hill climbs, and research.
